Using the sound locating method, bearing damage on wheetsets can be detected

The LD6000 is a frequency analysis set for acoustic pipe detection. But the device can do far more for the safety engineers in the railway industry: it allows them, for example, to detect bearing damage on wheels. This effective technique is called “sound locating method”.

Originally, the combination detector LD6000 was developed for leak and pipe detection and has proven itself many times in these applications. A number of acoustic operations can be carried out with the frequency analysis set – ranging from line routing to leak encircling up to particularly fast pinpoint location thanks to the smart function. It does not only guarantee exact leak detection in wide supply networks, but by use of the hydrogen measurement method enables especially economical test methods. Very high-quality microphones of German manufacturing allow to capture and subsequently process the signals. A less known possible application is material testing of train wheels, for example in case of ICE trains.

Material testing: The sound locating method for wheelset checks

The frequency analysis takes advantage of the fact that sound waves render information about the condition of materials audible – material failure sounds different than a sealed surface. The LD6000’s technical operating principle is based on the amplification of sound registered by the vibration sensor, the frequencies of which can be visualized on the high-resolution colour graphic display with touchscreen function. Particular attention is to be paid to the functions, e.g. filter, sound level value storage, minimum level, analysis and headphone overload protection. All filters and parameters can be freely configured in case of the LD6000. The procedure is simple: The noise levels of various measuring positions at the wheelset are compared and examined for differences. It’s safe to assume that the “loudest” measuring position will indicate the material failure. Consequently, the sound locating method constitutes a safe and simple possibility of detecting damages at train wheels and for accident prevention.
